GEORGE LANDOW / OWEN LAND: THE EVIL FAERIE (1966)

"Owen Land, formerly known as George Landow, was one of the most original and celebrated American filmmakers of the 1960s and 1970s. The works he made during this period fused an intellectual sense of reason with the irreverent wit that distances them from the supposedly 'boring' world of avant-garde cinema. Land constructs 'facades' of reality, often directly addressing the viewer using the language of television, advertising or educational films, and by featuring characters that are often the antithesis of those we might expect to see, such as podgy middle aged men and religious fanatics. He sometimes parodies experimental film itself, by mimicking his contemporaries and mocking the solemn approach of theorists and scholars. The Evil Faerie 1966 - Fluxfilm 25".

ZGRASS PAINT DEMO

THE WAY THINGS GO: MIND PLAYING TRICKS ON ME

Mind Playing Tricks on Me was the only number 1 single (Hot Rap Singles) ever released by the Geto Boys. It was featured on their 1991 album We Can't Be Stopped. It heavily samples Isaac Hayes' song "Hung Up On My Baby" from the soundtrack of the 1974 film Tough Guys.

The Kottonmouth Kings remade the song for their album Hidden Stash II: The Kream of the Krop under the same name. Mind Playing Tricks on Me has been referenced by Prodigy, of Mobb Deep fame, in his single, Mac 10 Handle, and by The Clipse, in the song Nightmares of their second album, Hell Hath No Fury. The Notorious B.I.G. references the song and sings the guitar line from the chorus in his hit One More Chance. In the song She Lives In My Lap off the highly successful 2003 OutKast album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, Andre 3000 samples Scarface's vocals from Mind Playing Tricks on Me. In the track Walk in the Streets The Game references Mind Playing Tricks on Me with the lines: "Must I remind you of that Geto Boy track/ Your mind is playing tricks on you, you'll never go plaque".

STEVEN SPIELBERG ON MAKING INDIANA JONES

Steven Speilberg discusses the relation between Indiana Jones's and serial movies like Spy Smasher.

HATSU YUME (FIRST DREAM) BY BILL VIOLA

Hatsuyume (初夢) is the Japanese word for the first dream had in the new year. Traditionally, the contents of the dream would foretell the luck of the dreamer in the ensuing year. In Japan, the night of December 31 was often passed without sleeping, thus the hatsuyume was often the dream seen the night of January 1. This explains why January 2 (the day after the night of the "first dream") is known as Hatsuyume in the traditional Japanese calendar.

It is considered to be particularly good luck to dream of Mount Fuji, a hawk, and an eggplant. This belief has been in place since the early Edo period but there are various theories regarding the origins as to why this particular combination was considered to be auspicious. One theory suggests that this combination is lucky because Mount Fuji is Japan's highest mountain, the hawk is a clever and strong bird, and the word for eggplant (nasu or nasubi 茄子) suggests achieving something great (nasu 成す). Another theory suggests that this combination arose because Mount Fuji, falconry, and early eggplants were favorites of the shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu.

HANNE'S EBAY TIP OF THE DAY: INTERVIEW MAGAZINE W. TRUMAN CAPOTE, SIGNED BY ANDY WARHOL

Quote from Ebay seller: "Interview Magazine, January 1979, Signed By Andy Warhol. Magazine dimensions: 17" x 11.5". Magazine is fixed at back to board and sits in frame with plexiglass cover. Truman Capote Interview (extensive) with many photographs. There is a small tear on the front page at the end of the Andy Warhol signature (as pictured.) This is an important copy of Interview Magazine with an extensive Truman Capote interview. If you are a Warhol and/or Capote fan, you will enjoy this vignette. In the late 1970s, Capote was in and out of rehab clinics, and news of his various breakdowns frequently reached the public. In 1978, talk show host Stanley Siegal did a live on-air interview with Capote, who, in an extraordinarily intoxicated state, confessed that he might kill himself. One year later, when he felt betrayed by Lee Radziwill in a feud with perpetual nemesis Gore Vidal, Capote arranged a return visit to Stanley Siegal's show, this time to deliver a bizarrely comic performance revealing salacious personal details about Radziwill and her sister, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. In an ironic twist, Warhol (who had made a point of seeking out Capote when he first arrived in New York) provided the author with the platform for his next artistic renewal. Warhol, who often partied with Capote at Studio 54, agreed to paint Capote's portrait as "a personal gift"—rather than for the six-figure sums he usually charged—in exchange for Capote contributing short pieces to Warhol's Interview magazine every month for a year. Initially the pieces were to consist of tape-recorded conversations, but soon Capote dispensed with the tape recorder and chose instead to craft meticulously composed "conversational portraits" that applied his literary skills to the magazine's dialogue-driven format. Out of this creative burst came the pieces that would form the basis for the bestselling Music for Chameleons (1980). To celebrate this unexpected renaissance, he underwent a facelift, lost weight and experimented with hair transplants. Nevertheless, Capote was unable to overcome his reliance upon drugs and liquor and had grown bored with New York by the turn of the 1980s. After the revocation of his driver's license (the result of speeding near his Long Island residence) and a hallucinatory seizure in 1980 that required hospitalization, Capote became fairly reclusive. These hallucinations continued unabated and scans revealed that his brain mass had perceptibly shrunk. On the rare occasions when he was lucid, he continued to hype Answered Prayers as being nearly complete and was reportedly planning a reprise of the Black and White Ball to have been held either in Los Angeles or a more exotic locale in South America. On a few occasions, he was still able to write. In 1982, a new short story, "One Christmas", appeared in the December issue of Ladies' Home Journal and the following year it became, like its predecessors "A Christmas Memory" and "The Thanksgiving Visitor", a holiday gift book. In 1983, "Remembering Tennessee", an essay in tribute to Tennessee Williams, who had died in February of that year, appeared in Playboy magazine. The series of short stories by Truman Capote began with the February 1979 issue. They were later published in book form as Music for Chameleons. Truman had appeared on Interview's January cover, with an interview inside the issue. He also had a facelift in February. (BC406) Bob Colacello: "It had all started one day in November 1978. Between swimming with Truman, smoking pot with Truman, dining with Truman, and dancing with Truman, it suddenly occurred to me that we should put Truman on the cover. Andy loved the idea: He already had entire days of Truman on tape. When I called Truman to say we wanted him on our January cover, he said he would only do it if Andy did the cover portrait himself. I explained that if Andy did Truman, he'd have to do every cover after that and we had to keep Andy's portrait business separate from the magazine's covers. 'Well, if I'm not good enough for Andy, ' said Truman, 'Then his magazine isn't good enough for me.' I went to Andy with Truman's reply, and we came up with a counter offer: Andy would paint Truman's portrait, not for the cover, but as a personal gift, in exchange for Turman's contributing a piece to Interveiew every month for one year. 'He really wouldn't have to do anything,' Andy said. 'Tell him that I'll just tape him with any person he wants every month and then Brigid [Berlin] will type it up and can make something out of it. Tell him it's a new way to write without writing. I'm sure he'll go for it...' Conversations with Capote debuted that February. Andy had taped Truman at the apartment of Robert Livingston, a gay activist who was dying of cancer, and at the office of Dr. Norman Orentreich, the highly publicized dermatologist... But it was the last time he [Capote] based a piece on tapes made by Andy. The problem was that Andy overtaped and threw the conversations off course, and then Brigid couldn't deal with typing up that much tape, and Truman couldn't deal with cutting down that much material. They both became quite hysterical over the fifty-page Orentreich manuscript, and finally Brigid exploded at Andy when he arrived at the Factory one afternoon. 'You just thing the more the better,' she told him. 'And you say the stupidest things.' Andy was used to Brigid's bluntness and hit back with a blunt line of his own, 'You look fat today, Brigid.' " Go there!

REBLOG OF THE DAY: "AUSTRALIA IS OFFERING THE GREATEST JOB IN THE WORLD!"

This must be the greatest job ever for internet addicted peoples like myself! Picture and quotes from Dlisted: "This might be the greatest job in the world, but I have a few very important questions. I'll get to those in a second. So, Australia's tourism bitches think they are offering the most wonderful job that ever existed. The job pays $100,000USD and you will have to relocate to Hamilton Island on Australia's Great Barrier Reef for half of the year. Your duties include doing a bunch of island shit like laying on the beach, snorkeling in the ocean, digging the sand out of your snatch...etc..etc... You must know how to swim and be able to read and write English (I'm out!), because they want you to blog about your experiences weekly. Yeah, because people really want to see pictures of you having the time of your damn life while they are sitting in their tiny cubicles, pushing papers and writing notes to their co-workers to STOP LEAVING DISHES IN THE SINK!!!! (I love those notes). Not only will Australia pay you, but you will also get airfare from your home country and you will get to stay in an oceanfront villa with a pool." More here.

HANNE'S MUSIC TIP OF THE DAY: TOUR BUS MUSIC VIDEOS

Bon Jovi: "Wanted Dead or Alive"

Mötley Crüe: "Home Sweet Home" (This is such a great song!)

And Journey (my favorite band at the moment, in case you didn't notice) : "Faithfully", go here.

SHOPPING TIP OF THE DAY: "READY FOR TAKE HOME JANUARY 2009!"

If dogs were allowed in my building, I would be on the bus to Bethlehem, Philadelphia right now to take home/ shop one of these. Youtube user's headline as above, with quote: "Superior quality French Bichon Frise puppies shown here. Reserve now! Call 610-262-1142 for information. Expect Superior Quality."

In case you did not know, Bichon Frises existed in the Mediterranean area as far back as 600-300 B.C. from which came the name "Barbichon", later shortened to "Bichon". Because of their merry disposition, they traveled much and were often used as barter by sailors as they moved from continent to continent. The dogs found early success in Spain and it is generally felt that Spanish seamen introduced the breed to the Canary Island of Tenerife. In the 1300s, Italian sailors rediscovered the little dogs on their voyages and are credited with returning them to the continent, where they became great favorites of Italian nobility. Often, as was the style of the day with dogs in the courts, they were cut "lion style," like a modern-day Portuguese Water Dog.

The Bichon went to sea as a working Spanish boat dog. They were perfect for a boat because they do not shed, don't need a lot of exercise, and are fine companions, as well as obedient and easily trained. Though not considered a retriever or water dog, the Bichon, due to its ancestry, has an affinity for and enjoys water and retrieving. On the boats however, the dog's job was to meet and greet people with great enthusiasm. Their purpose was to make weary people smile and feel at ease, but most of all to cause these people to like the Spanish. It is one of the few dogs that has eyes like a human, that it shows the whites of its eye as well as expressions of happiness in them. The Bichons were the little happy ambassadors for the Spanish at every new port of call.

The "Tenerife", or "Bichon", had success in France during the Renaissance under Francis I (1515-47), but its popularity skyrocketed in the court of Henry III (1574-89). The breed also enjoyed considerable success in Spain as a favorite of the Infantas, and painters of the Spanish school often included them in their works. For example, the famous artist, Goya, included a Bichon in several of his works.
Interest in the breed was renewed during the rule of Napoleon III, but then waned until the late 1800s when it became the "common dog", running the streets, accompanying the organ grinders of Barbary, leading the blind and doing tricks in circuses and fairs. Even though the Bichon Frisé is no longer known as a common dog, when you go to a circus if any of the acts contain a dog it's very likely to be a Bichon due to its high ability to learn.

THIS JUST IN: THE JONAS BROTHERS PAY SURPRISE VISIT TO THE WHITE HOUSE!

jonas.jpg

From ABC News: "ABC News has learned that after their scavenger hunt last night, First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama were paid a surprise White House visit by the Jonas Brothers.

The visit came after Malia, Sasha, and some of their friends from their new school Sidwell Friends saw two new Disney movies -- High School Musical 3 and Bolt -- and participated in a scavenger hunt in which they ran around their new home, learning about this history of the White House. White House ushers had organized a similar scavenger hunt for a young Chelsea Clinton when she first moved into the White House in 1993.

At the end of Malia and Sasha's scavenger late-night hunt, they opened a door to discover their favorite musical performers: Kevin, Joe, and Nick Jonas -- the pop boy band sensation who first exploded on the Disney Channel and also appeared earlier this week at the Kids' Inaugural Concert."

Those are some lucky kids!
